Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2019 Verified Purchase PARASITE may not be for everyone, but I have a soft spot for it, having seen it upon the original 3-D release back in 1982. If you accept it for what it is - a low budget monster movie - you'll have a good time. I'll bet Demi Moore doesn't list this movie on her resume, but this was her first big role. That 1982 screening was the only instance where I witnessed someone actually be so disturbed by a gory 3-D gimmick that they literally ran out of the theater screaming. I didn't see what all the fuss was about, but maybe she was delicate. This new restoration for blu-ray done by the 3-D Film Archive is amazing. They have made this little low budget monster fest look far better than it did back in the day. This isn't today's conservative and wimpy 3-D, it is very deep with excellent lingering off-the-screen gimmicks (pop-out to you kids). Extras on the disc are plentiful - interviews, commentary, 3-D restoration comparison (wow), the delightful theatrical trailer, and more. There is also a course an option to watch the film in boring old flat 2-D, but I never will. First off, the movie is a silly Alien takeoff that's cheaply and ineptly done. Throw in a very very young Demi Moore, some cheesy gore effects, and a post-apocalyptic world that looks oddly like 1980s American, and it's an enjoyable mess. What it does have going for it here is this astonishing loaded 3-D special edition. A cheap 80s horror should not look this good. The 3-D Film Archive did the transfer and it looks impeccable on all counts. The 3-D effects are realized using modern techniques, not red/blue anaglyph, and they look astonishing at times. Lots of things hanging in the foreground really make this an impressive viewing event in 3-D. And then there's the pipe! The special edition side of things is not neglected either; in addition to a 2-D version of the film for those who are not 3-D capable, there's an audio commentary, several packed documentaries on the writing, filming and scoring, and other goodies. If you have any fondness for this picture, or generally like 80s cheesy horror, this disc is a must. It's a dopey, ropey little grindhouse schlock-fest that wouldn't be much fun in 2D but is an absolute blast in 3D, and that's exactly what it was meant to be. The extreme pop-outs rival those in The Bubble and Jaws 3, while the layering and depth and use of 3D space are always eye-catching. I like the way Band and his stereographer experiment with foreground/background separation. It's like they're figuring out a new visual language for the Z-axis, but unlike most modern meddlers in 3D, Band, like Arch Oboler with The Bubble, relished the negative space "outside the screen" as well. I love that. I think it's fabulous for this kind of film. The metal tray in the lab and the steel pipe with blood dripping out are easily two of my favourite 3D blu-ray moments this year. I didn't know the story was post-apocalyptic, so that added a little interest. And to be honest I’ve seen a lot worse. The lead actor is so bad his performance ranks below that of the parasite. The rest of the cast is decent. I didn’t find the film scary or jumpy in the slightest, but it is icky. As others have said, the 3D restoration is superb – more than up to the 3D Film Archive’s unfailingly high standards. Good extras, too. All in all, it’s a damn good release. It seemed totally unnecessary to have the bare breasts scene early in the movie. Maybe as a draw. Later into the story does one get a hint of what happened to give such an apocalyptic flair to the movie, where everything seemed at the edge of existence. It was Merchants teaming with the government for the new order. And the Merchants weaponizing the parasite. The lead character, Dr. Paul Dean has little in the way of dialogue or script. Perhaps the reason to watch is that this is an early Demi Moore movie, but nothing spectacular. A disconnect at the end. First, from earlier, little gasoline is ever sold, and at a very high price. And bullets cannot cause a tank of gas to explode, but a large tank of gasoline exploding was the ending of the movie. The Merchant man certainly was armed with an interesting weapon. Just watched it yesterday night. Holy shit what a masterpiece of cinema. The level of detail and the density of story told in just 2 hours. Absolutely brilliant, it deserved the Oscar win and the Palme D'Or 100.

Director Bong: why? Me, completely uninvolved in the making of this movie: sweats profusely.
"Parasite" is freaking is a comedy, a family drama, a thriller, a horror, a political comentery, a social drama, a an action piece, you have to watch it to believe it. It is just every cool, fun and clever movie shrinked into 2 hours and 15 minutes of pure and unstoppable laughter, some masive and engaging thrills and a story about the distinctio of classes and th edynamic of a family trying to make ends meet.
The cinematography is really distinct andI like that Asian films have a reather common but unqiue look and tone and creates a magical atmosphere and tone. The way the camera moves is so sweet and subtle, the framing, the long shots, it is just so fun to watch. The lighting is beautiful, the way certain rooms are lit give a darker or lighter tone. It never tries to show off and everytihng feels so organic that at one point you forget you are watching fictional characters and a made-up story.
The soundtrack is another thing to praise of. Most of the tracks are classic music and although it often feels so contradictory to the film, the result is so great and so much personality was added to the movie.
The great thing is that despite that the characters have not such a deep arc or are given any major traits, I was able to connect with them in the end and the whole film feels like a big family struggle. You grow with them and graually start to care, in site of their anethical and cheaty choices and actions. Evey actor gives such an appealing perormance and some of their reactinons are really on spot.
The humour is there mostly during the first hour. It is seet and it feels genuine, it what family members would talk and joke about. It creates an intimacy and a fun time. Then we get a lot of shifts in the tone and the twists come and go and the great thing is that the film is constalnty on the go, it is always moving forward and does not waste any in the end the Parasite is a great story toold in the best way possible.
The political comentary is perfect. There is actually a film that was released last and I vastly enjoyed. Burning. Biurning was about a trouble guy feeling mad that his friend is dating a ritch successful man and he has nobody and actually talks about class discretions in a fascinting way. Parasite does the sam thing but in a different way. In the movie, we see a poor family trying to work together to scam some narrow-minded ritch family that live in a huge house with their luxuries and all. It is what "Us" went for but done in a more clear nd subtle way. The ritch use the poor and the poor try to become the ritch. You either leave in a fancy house with a garden and a maid or in the ground floor with insects and a smell. It is like two different words that slowly destroy each other.
I will not say more. Watch this film and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I laughed, gasped, fell into thoughts, I was moved and always wanted more. It is a genius fraud, it has several "peach scenes" a crazy artistic kid, a birthday party and just make a plan and go watch. In fact, don't make a plan. Just watch it.

The “PARASITE” title is meant to be the poor family because they were trying to affect others job. And just when you thought the movie is finished being awesome, it still has time to give you an Inception style ending. What a masterpiece. The scene where the guy comes out of the basement is t e rr i f iying. The rich family looks out there widescreen window to see beautiful yard. The poor family also had a window but they had to look always up. When they're rich family looked out their window the beauty they saw was the same eye level as them. Also noticed how many stairs are in this movie. This movie made me into an intellectual.
